Pinup Style Clothing

Pinup received it’s name by literally being pictures that were pinned up onto walls as advertisements for models and actresses. Pinup photographs were a woman’s way of being noticed in show business, they were a form of business cards.

Dress by She’s Dynamite

Pinup has then grown into this luxurious image of curvy ladies in darling forties outfits. Pinup style clothing is now extremely popular amongst vintage loving ladies, making a come-back in the modern age.

The most well known image associated with a pin up lifestyle is provocative young women. Wearing either two piece bathing suits or being almost completely nude but never showing any of their good bits. Pinup style clothing has expanded into describing the fashion of the 1940s, even though the outfits of the forties aren’t technically pinup.

In the early 1940s World War II put a halt on making lavish and expensive dresses. The styles of the forties during the war were practical. Pin-up was very large during the war though, soldiers would hang up pinup posters and calenders while overseas. Looking at beautiful and curvacious woman was a temporary escape from the bombs and gunfire. After the war, dresses became exquisite and form fitting – paving the way towards the fashion of the 1950s and rockabilly.

Pin-up style clothing also consists of playful costumes such as female sailor and army uniforms. During the second World War women would often dress themselves in these costumes to visit American soldiers, raising moral among other things. Pinup is normally known for its display of seductive and flirtatious lingerie, sexy hosiery and garters, high heels, and simple props. Pin up model’s photo shoots were usually very energetic and playful.

These online shops are great sources for authentic and adorable pinup style clothing, any woman can achieve that signature forties look with stores such as these: PinUp Girl Clothing, Unique Vintage, Mod Cloth, Bettie Page, PinUp Peep Shop, Pin-Up Parade, Babygirl Boutique, Lolita Girl Clothing, Retro Glam, Pink Bow City, Pinky Pinups, Pinch Me Clothing, Dollhouse Bettie and Lucy B.

60s Pin-Up Fashion
The 60s was an era of change and female development, socially and fashion wise. Even though the golden age of pin-up and burlesque had faded away into a dull shine, actresses and models from the 1960s picked up the pieces with new and interesting looks and styles. The 1960s were the years of constantly changing fashion for females, from their hair to the their clothes and lingerie.

Dress by Senorita Martita

60s pin-up fashion was just as spunky and delightfully provocative as the the 1940s and 1950s, except the style had almost completely changed. Softly curled hair wasn’t seen as often and old-fashion stockings were pretty much thrown out the window when panty hose was invented. The hair styles of the 1960s is probably the most noticeable change. Bouffants, beehives, short androgynous hair cuts, bobs, iron straight hair with fringes, backcombed hair with high pony-tails, wearing decorated combs and slides, headscarves, pill box hats and even wigs and fake clip-in hair pieces. So, already 60s pin-up fashion has morphed from curvy old-fashion siren to very edgy and high-fashion.

If a lady is willing to make the commitment to completely destroy the O-zone layer, with the amount of hair-spray she’ll need to achieve the hair of the 60s, then the fashion of the 1960s is a good fit!

60s pin-up fashion wouldn’t be 60′s pin-up fashion without seductive lingerie and curve flattering outfits. The most popular dresses and styles in the 1960s were empire line dresses, dress jackets with broaches and buttons, duster coats, pleated skirts, straight over blouses and princess seam-lined clothes. Lingerie in the 60′s has paved the way for modern underwear today, bringing lower cut panty lines and push up-style bras and lace underwear into existence.

The 60′s became more revealing and the female fashion scene had become a lot bolder. Pinup models of the sixties were well-known attractive actresses and female models such as Twiggy, Ann Margret, Ursula Andress, Yvonne Craig and Anita Ekberg.

These online stores are the best places to look for 60s pin up fashion: Glamour Bunny, Pin Up Girl Clothing, Get Go Retro, ModCloth, Senorita Martita, Stop Staring Clothes and Shabbyapple.

The Sixties was a time of change and social development for women, creating the always changing fashion industry of the 1960s.

Senorita Martita, an vintage online shop, is dedicated to creating 60s inspired vintage dresses. The designer describes her dresses as playful and comfortable, crafting vintage dresses from soft cottons and silks.

Martha is the head haunch-o and the imaginative brains behind Senorita Martita’s beautiful collections. She aims to fabricate high quality 1960 themed dresses that are versatile and stylish. The thought of parenting a line of dresses made of itchy tweed and heavy cottons would most likely make her cringe in discomfort. Women should be able to move freely and feel pleasant while remaining 60s chic.

Originating in Madrid Spain, Senorita Martita dishes out delicious candy colored pieces. Martha’s love for bright eye-popping colors leads to very vibrant fashion collections. The Spring and Summer lines consist of free flowing short sun dresses and skirts as the Autumn and Winter collections carry button down coats, pea coats and adorable empire dresses with bows. The shop also offers a variety of charming patterns such as plaid but what really makes the dresses pop are the unique artistic designs. From bumble bees and flowers to dragon flies the bottom of some dresses are embroidered with these cute little numbers.

Mint greens and tangerine oranges fill this online store with such life and color, composing such a groovy and timeless atmosphere. With so many collections and pieces for every season, the choices may seem a little overwhelming for one vintage lady to handle. Those over-loaded feelings are worth it to purchase a high quality 1960s inspired dress that will make a woman want to dance!

From high collars to pleated skirt bottoms, Senorita Martita accommodates a luxurious 60′s feel in its online shop. Even creating its own fashion line for the ever-famous Barbie Doll. Barbie looks quit dashing with a high beehive hairstyle and a lively Magenta colored Sixties inspired dress.

If these dresses don’t make a lady feel alive and want to sport a pillbox hat, then who knows what will! Senorita Martita is one of the best shops to satisfy a craving for 1960 inspired dresses.

Retro defines something that is reminiscent of the past, causing individuals to remember and ponder about completed years. Retro is also a trendy new style of women’s fashion being inspired by the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

Model: Bernie Dexter, Photo: Levi Dexter
Thx to: Rockabilly-clothing.de

A famous retro look for women is the polka dot vintage dress. The dress will have a tight-upper half that accentuates the bust and hour-glass figure while the bottom usually flows down and outwards.

The most common retro look for women include wiggle dresses, wrap dresses, pencil skirts, empire lined dresses, full skirt dresses, pea coats, hosiery from the forties and fifties and vintage swimwear. Retro is normally categorized into these three categories: pin-up, rockabilly and sixties chic.

Pin-up retro styles are generally based off of the the 1940s, most likely during Word War II for the fact that pin-up girls were a brief escape for soldiers. Rockabilly is named after the unique genre of music in the fifties called rockabilly. While, sixties chic is pretty self-explanatory. The 1960s was a time for straighter and boxer styles of clothing, gogo dancers and funky shapes and patterns.

Achieving a retro look for women has become easier due to modern technology. More and more vintage loving fashion designers are marketing their goods for ladies all around the world to enjoy. Online shops such as: ModCloth, Bettie Page, Trashy Diva, Pinup-Fashion, Retro Glam, Get Go Retro, Unique Vintage, I Love Vintage, Red Dress Shoppe, Daddy-os, Pinup Girl Clothing, Queen of Heartz, Laquaintrelle and Lolita Girl Clothing are excellent retro clothing sources.

A retro lady must remember to do her homework on the other elements of retro fashion as well. Hair, make-up and accessories are all equally important. Hair of the 1940′s and 1950s were usually gently curled and waved, take Bettie Page, Judy Garland and Lucille Ball as prime examples. The fifties was also known for it’s pompadours and ponytails and bandanas. The 1960s has a decade of daring and stiff hair styles. The most famous and well known being the bouffant and the beehive. Accurate representations of vintage hair, make-up and fashion is how a person can achieve a retro look for women.

Some ladies just need that extra edge added to their vintage style. Growing continuously bored with simple post World War II dresses and overly conservative retro collections. For classy old-fashion divas who desire to be a little less modest and a little more rock n’ roll, rockabilly is the fashion sensation to look into!

The rockabilly style is inspired by the 1950s and is derived from the rockabilly genre of music, which was an intoxicating mixture of old fifties rock music and hillbilly blue grass tunes.
Some popular rockabilly fashion choices in the fifties were tight sweaters and cardigans, full swing skirts, wiggle dresses, pencil skirts, wrap dresses, high waist bottoms, capri pants and the famous leather jacket. A good example of edgy yet classy rockabilly fifties fashion is the movie “Grease.”

Rockabilly bathing suits in today’s age are interpretations of the classic bathing suits in the 1950s. Form-fitting, hour-glass creating, strapless, high-waist swimwear that makes a woman feel like a pin-up diva.

Model: Bernie Dexter, Photo: Levi Dexter

To classify a Vintage inspired swimsuit as ‘rockabilly’, the bathing suit must contain a few key elements: Classic shape, fun designs and a dash of rock’ n roll.

Rockabilly was first classified as a type of music, a sound deriving from many different mixes of music genres. Then people and fashion designers started reflecting back on the unique stylings of the 1950s and the followers of the rockabilly movement. Rockabilly is now a prominent style of fashion, including rockabilly bathing suits.

Rockabilly swimwear is energetic and usually vibrant. Clashing colors and fun patterns and fabrics, these rock n’ roll pin-up pieces are show stoppers at the beach or swimming pool. Rockabilly swimsuits are modeled after 1950′s swimwear. One piece strapless bathing suits were the cat’s meow of the fifties. Bikinis in the fifties didn’t really exist except for women that were considered ‘inappropriate’ by social standards. Two-piece swim suits were very modest with broad strapped tops and high waist swim skirts.

The patterns of the past were soft with stripes and floral designs while rockabilly bathing suits today are loud and vivacious. The rockabilly style consists of vibrant colors such as ruby reds, tangerine oranges and yellow-jacket yellows. The patterns vary from blue and white naval stripes, playful cherries, cheddar colored cheetah spots to flirty polka dots and flowers.

The best places to get classic and lively rockabilly bathing suits online are: SugarDoll, SirensSwimwear, Popina, MySisterPat, Get Go Retro, For Luna and ModCloth.

Rockabilly bathing suits are perfect additions to a fifties girl’s vintage inspired wardrobe. Classy and coy, these bathing suits are ideal for dancing to Elvis on the beach or flirting with the tan hunky lifeguard. No rockabilly bathing suit is complete without cute sandals and victory curled hair, tied back with a colorful bandana. If bandanas seem a little too hillybilly, a rockabilly lady should sport a bright flower in her hair instead to keep that signature rockabilly flare.

Rockabilly Clothing for Women

The clothing industry for rockabilly ladies has grown and expanded in selection all across the globe. Catering to rockabellas of all shapes, sizes and age – rockabilly clothing for women can now transform any plain Jane into a fiery red fifties fashionista.

A newborn vintage babe might be wondering a simple question though: “What is rockabilly exactly?” To understand the difference between rockabilly clothing for women based off of the 1950s and pin-up outfits inspired by the 1940s, a baby rockabella must know the history behind the rockabilly style.

The term rockabilly is derived from the combination of two genres of music, rock n’ roll and bluegrass, also referred to as hillbilly music. The southern feel of a trailer park and the taste of a cheap cigar mixed with the rebellious edge of swinging rock n’ roll and red lip stick created the rockabilly fashion we know and love today. The 1950′s is the era that mothered the rockabilly uprising and the rockabilly boogie. Rockabilly clothing for women in the fifties though wasn’t always as colorful and bold as leather pants and red stiletto heels. The style and presence of a fifties rockabilly style was defined by the social class of a lady.

A more conservative rockabilly lady would sport more traditional fifties garments and dresses such as: full skirt dresses, dresses with broad collars or ‘peter pan’ collars, low heels, mary-janes, floral patterned outfits with feminine bows and polka dots. Rockabilly clothing for women today still adhere to the innocent 1950 style by incorporating dainty polka dots, bright flowers and girlish bows. Today, the innocent and classic designs of rockabilly fifties dresses can be dolled up to resemble a more rock n’ roll ensemble using signature modern day rockabilly patterns.

Rockabilly is known for its signature patterns such as: bright red cherries, small swallows, feisty cheetah and leopard spots, anchors, sailor stripes and even cross bones and skulls. Rockabilly clothing in the present day is usually based from the defiant style of bad girls in the 1950s. Think of the Pink Ladies from the movie Grease with their hair curled and tied back with colorful bandanas. Rockabilly clothing for women is sultry and full of attitude from curve hugging pencil skirts, tight sweaters, capri pants, blouses showing both shoulders, high waist two piece bathing suits and tall heels. With leather jackets and red lips, who could resist such a style?

The next question for a rockabilly lady would be: “Where do I find rockabilly clothing?” Te answer to that would be at all these fine online stores: Daddy-Os, DollaBella, TiCCi, Fifties Store, Bettie Page, Tara Starlet, Vivien of Holloway, Voodoobeat, CharlotteandJane, RockaBetty, Trash Monkey, Too Fast Online, Lucky 13, Style Icons Closet, Sugar Doll and ModCloth.

Rockabilly Swimwear – What To Wear!

By modern day standards the swimwear of the 1950s was conservative. Modest treasures of the sand and surf. Rockabilly swimwear today still adheres to that modesty, while adding its own signature rockabilly boogie flare.

Model: Bernie Dexter, Photo: Levi Dexter
Thx to: Rockabilly-clothing.de

For rockabilly women who want to stay as true to the fifties culture as possible, it’s important to know which styles were prominent in the era of rockabilly tunes.

The most popular styles of swimwear in the 1950s were the ones that most properly flattered the female body. Since corsets had fizzled out like a used sparkler, it was up the influence of the 1940s and the new rockabilly culture to produce new undergarments and fifties swimwear. Rockabilly swimwear still retained the shape of corsets, using some boning to construct a perfect hourglass figure.

In the fifties one piece bathing suits were the big thing, since bikinis were associated with being unsavory and a little too ‘wild’. For those who wanted a more revealing look, two piece swimwear was available. The tops were broader and instead of bikini bottoms they were paired with a high waist skirt. By keeping the designs classic and adding bold patterns and vibrant shades of colors such as: large polka dots, neon zebra stripes and merry cherries – modern rockabilly swimwear can still stay true to the fifties.

It’s rare to find a vintage bathing suit from the early or mid 1900s, so the challenge of re-creating these elegant styles is set upon today’s fashion designers. Lacing thin steel boning inside a bathing suit isn’t as popular anymore but these shops are still great places to grab dibs on fifties inspired rockabilly swimwear: SugarDoll, For Luna, ModCloth, Popina, Marks and Spencers, SirensSwimwear and MySisterPat.

Rockabilly swimwear itself is usually an eye-popping piece of eye candy, with it’s leopard print fabrics and curve flattering shapes. To make those classic suits a little more naughty and playful, it’s best to accessorize properly for a trip to the beach or swimming pool. Back in the fifties, women wore wrap dresses to cover up their bathing suits and sported flower covered swim-caps to protect their curls. Today a rockabilly lady can suffice with a stylish red bandana or cute headband to keep her victory rolls safe from harm, while wearing a sarong to make her hips more sultry. If one is planing on just getting a tan and flirting with the hunky life guard, red lips aren’t a bad idea either.

With every puffed up pompadour and swipe of bright red lipstick, rockabilly makes it’s comeback from the swinging ages of the 1950s. The backbone of this boisterous yet classy style derives from the marriages of many different genres of music.

Bild in Flickr CC by Etsy Ketsy

The younger generation was greatly influenced by the combination of sounds that included Western Swing, Blues Music, Boogie Woogie, Rock n’ Roll and Bluegrass. The term rockabilly was created by meshing together the word “Rock” from Rock ‘n Roll and “Billy” from Hillbilly. Rockabilly music was originated in the southern parts of the united states and has since transformed itself into a modern day fashion sensation for rockabilly ladies.

Depending on a ladies social class, a rockabilly style was worn in different ways. Not all young girls were allowed or wanted to follow a rock n’ roll lifestyle. For rockabilly ladies who were a little more straight laced and modest, most likely coming from a traditional home, their style would consist of full skirt dresses and low heels. Conservative rockabellas were known to be very feminine with soft floral patterns and big bows, socks with their mary janes and flats and broad collared fifties dresses.

More rebellious rockabilly ladies would choose to accentuate their curves to the fullest. They are the ones who show a little bit more skin and are a tad more daring than most women in the fifties. This more scandalous and loud rockabilly style is what helped morph rockabilly fashion into what it is today. Bold rockabilly ladies from the 1950s would dress themselves in curve hugging attire such as pencil skirts and tight sweaters. Old-time rockabellas would wear stiletto heels, blouses that exposed both shoulders and maybe a little midriff, tight high-waist capris and tied-up button up shirts.

Today rockabilly is known for it’s fun patterns and tough rock n’ roll exterior. Studs, spikes, leopard and cheetah spots, polka dots, swallows, cherries, leather and colorful bandanas are everyday looks for rockabilly ladies.

Great places to shop, so one can turn themselves into a rockin’ rockabella, are Daddy-Os, ModCloth, Vivien of Holloway, Fifties Store, DollaBella, Style Icons Closet and TiCCi.

Turing oneself into a modern day rockabilly lady isn’t tough, it just ensues a decent amount of dedication and trial and error. One must be willing to have fallen curls and uneven cat-eyes to eventually achieve the rockabilly look.
