Rockabilly clothing is not for the faint hearted woman. Mixing fashion and rock music is a fierce collaboration that creates intense, eye-catching retro styles. The statements made with rockabilly clothing typically reflect the classic rock era of the 1950s and 1960s, mixing leather, lace, vintage t shirts, stiletto boots, greaser hair and fun, flowing skirts. The clothing options are diverse and designed to reflect the personal style and tastes of virtually any man or woman.
Vintage, pin up, gothic and punk styles are also common trends that are incorporated into the rockabilly scene. Leather jackets, newsboy hats, bright red lipstick and skin tight clothing, including t shirts, are all part of the rockabilly clothing look. It started off by mixing the components and styles of country and rock music, eventually merging into more of a rocker edge. New age music that is considered to represent the rockabilly scene includes the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Green Day, with modern icons like Dita Von Teese, a popular burlesque dancer, incorporating rockabilly duds into her costumes and looks.
To incorporate a bit of the rockabilly edge into your personal style, there are plenty of online boutiques that offer excellent rockabilly clothing. Miss Hussy Clothing is a favorite of many rockabilly aficionados, along with Whirling Turban and Stop Staring Clothing. Rockabilly Rules, Rockabilly-Fashion.de, Tokyo Motor Grrrl, and FiveTone.com all include rockabilly, pin up and vintage styles at a variety of sizes, styles and price ranges. Lady K Loves has a large selection of dresses that can be worn with a rockabilly leather jacket, lace-up boots and seamed pantyhose. With the massive variety of boutiques specializing in rockabilly, pin up and retro clothes, it is a breeze to find something that suits you perfectly.
Completing your rockabilly clothing look with the right hair style and make up is integral to true rockabilly form. Bright red lips, black cat-eye liner, voluptuous curls for the girls and greased back hair for the guys are all important when going for a true rockabilly look. Lastly, a confident and fierce attitude is a must. Wear it with confidence and a smile and you’ll have all the onlookers stopped dead in their tracks.
Tokyo Motor Grrrl
Tokyo Motor Grrl is an online pin up, retro and rockabilly themed online store with a slight Asian racer theme to the products. However, don’t let the name fool you; you don’t have to be from the east or into cars in order to obsess over their wide variety of clothing and accessories.
Between the dresses, corsets, handbags and accessories, girls with a penchant for pin up couture, anchor-themed accessories and a hint of racing stripes will find their products to be exciting and perfect for them and their personal style.
One of the most exciting categories of Tokyo Motor Grrrl clothing is the “playsuit” section. High-waisted short shorts attached to a bodacious halter top body suit are available in polka dots, leopard print, stripes and even two pieced styles for the classic pin up style we all know and love. Imagine the iconic pin up girls of the 1950s seductively leaning over a 1967 Mustang; if you’ve always wondered where to find that adorable body suit, you can find it right here.
We can’t forget about the corsets. All Tokyo Motor Grrrl corsets are handmade to fit your body perfectly. No two are alike and their skilled seamstresses can create one that will fit you like a glove, all you have to provide is your measurements. Their sizes range from “petite” to “bodacious” to “luscious,” so if you’re thinking you could never pull off a corset due to your size, think again. Tokyo Motor Grrrl can make it.
The boutique is also known for their handbags and accessories. Brass knuckle keychains and switchblades that double as bottle openers (you never know when it will come in handy!) are available in the online shop. Handbags and clutches in an endless variety of solid primaries and bold prints with brass knuckle handles, chains and studs are available, all at reasonable prices and in several different sizes.
Tokyo Motor Grrrl’s clothing and accessories appeal to women of all styles. Whether you’re a classic pin up aficionado or love to add rebellious punk styles (such as brass knuckles) to your wardrobe, Tokyo Motor Grrrl has a variety wide enough to add to any aspect of your wardrobe.
Pin Up Outfits
Pin up outfits are all about big hair, red lips, curves, femininity, bold colors, sassy leopard print and polka dots, and most importantly, a fierce attitude. Pencil skirts, sky-high stilettos, bold eyeliner, and flattering corsets all add to the fierceness of a sexy pin up outfit.
One reason pin up outfits, retro themes and rockabilly styles are so popular is because not only are they diverse enough to reflect each woman’s personal style and taste, but they are not designed for one “type” of woman. Whether she’s a size 2 or a size 22, there is something in the cards for each one. Pin up outfits are designed to enhance a woman’s natural features, giving her a sexy, feminine appeal while flattering her gorgeous natural assets. Pin up outfits are not designed to turn a woman into something she’s not. Instead, they are designed to enhance who a woman truly is.
Classic pin up outfits are inspired from the fashion of the 1940′s, 1950′s, and 1960′s. They gained popularity during World War II, a time when women longed to show off their innocence while still displaying their true sex appeal. Pin up outfits can show as much or as little skin as a woman wants, but the original outfits were typically less revealing than what is considered to be an average or revealing outfit today. Pin up swimsuits typically covered the belly button and part of the thighs, while still looking sexy and leaving much to the imagination. Many pin up outfits follow this same rule, leaving more skin covered while flattering the figure with form fitting designs.
If you’re dying to try out a pin up outfit but don’t know where to start, there are a wide variety of pin up boutiques that can help you find exactly what you’d like to dress up with. Start with some flattering undergarments from Purrfect Pineapples or Girdlebound, and find a flattering pin up dress from Moxie Minx or Pinup Couture. Finish off the pin up outfit with sexy heels from Baby Girl Boutique, line your eyes with some cat-like black eyeliner, and tease your hair into the perfectly curled coif. Swipe a streak of bright red lipstick across your lips for the perfect finish to your pin up outfit.
Pin Up Clothing
Ooh-la-la and va-va-VOOM, all the men love ladies in pin up clothing costumes! If they say they don’t, they are lying, plain and simple. The fact is this: the many pin up clothing styles easily enhance all kinds of figures and anyone who adores adorning themselves with retro fashions should take heed.
From innocent girl-next-door housewife to sexy bombshell, the pin up look covers a wide range of personalities in amazingly figure-flattering designs.
Now the stick-thin mod styles of the 1960s and the lean and lanky look for ladies of the 1970s are all well and good for females who like to look pre-adolescent, but if you want to feel like a Real Woman then you need to get your curves on. A girdle, corset or a bullet bra from shops like Secrets in Lace, FairyGothMother or Playful Promises give structure to your shape, and some retro heels like the Ellie Shoes Penthouse Collection Open Toe Pinup Girl Heels sold at Baby Girl Boutique give your legs and bum a lovely lift. Don’t forget your seamed stockings like those sold at Ars Vivendi. With their long line leading up your legs and underneath your skirt they give all the gents about a bit of wonder and intrigue.
Do you like to feel truly sexy and have all eyes lock on you as you sashay across a room? Buy a sassy wiggle dress like the Sugar Dress in Red with Black Cherries from Collectif sold at Pinup Girl Clothing. A true wiggle dress has a hem narrower than its hip and this tiny base is what keeps the ladies’ legs together at the knee and creates the classic wiggle walk.
Pin up clothing styles include bombshell dresses, satin A-line swings, bustiers, boleros, cardigans and capris; sailor-style shorts and skirts, tailored military outfits, shapely gingham shirts and flouncy peasant tops. Tailored to make everyone a wasp-waisted and busty as they possibly can be, what’s the bottom line? Whether you are tall and skinny or have girth and a full rear, there is no need for despair because pin up clothing will make you fair!
Cheeky cheesecakes and rockabilly hot-rod honeys make room in your boudoir’s armoire for Nicole Katherine Designs, the vintage-inspired retro, rockabilly and pin up clothing line from the same designer who first brought us the campy country western Betty Buccaneer Clothing.
Nicole Katherine’s original dresses and separates all embody her stylistic evolution toward more classic vintage silhouettes yet each piece retains her distinct and sassy mark, from the stunning and sophisticated gray suit dress ‘Elizabeth’ and the retro flamenco-style, circle-skirted ‘Bella Muerta’ dress with matching bolero, to the nautical ‘Armada Belle’ blouse with matching side-button pants, the ‘Lauren’ pencil skirt in gray (with or without contrast pocket flaps) and the classic 1940’s ‘Lindy Blouse’ (available in fabrics from solid rust to plaid). A mother and passionate Sagittarius with fiery red hair, Nicole infuses each design with pure heart and soul and while she cannot personally hand-sew every garment, nothing she offers is mass produced.
Fashion-conscious from a young age, while growing up in Montana Nicole was appalled by the apparel available in stores. Dismayed that the rockabilly and punk styles she loved were nowhere to be found, she enlisted her grandmother to teach her to sew and by age 13 was regularly adapting dress patterns and tweaking thrift store finds to fabricate her own custom wardrobe. A former psychology writer, Nicole Katherine became truly enthusiastic about original clothes design after creating her costumes for Irish Dance competitions. She learned advanced sewing and pattern drafting during a short stint at the Art Institute of Seattle then interned under Annamarie Von Foley of Revamp Vintage and is currently finishing a degree at the Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing in Los Angeles. Nicole Katherine now splits her time between California and her hometown of Missoula, Montana, where she runs her studio out of her family’s aircraft maintenance hangar.
Nicole Katherine Designs are available online at her website, nicolekatherine.com and at selected sites like www.getgoretro.com, www.catslikeus.com and more. Prices for these handmade delights range from $45 to $175 and custom tailoring is a mere additional $10. International and wholesale orders are welcome, and clothing can be returned for store credit or exchange. For upcoming news and designs, follow her on Twitter and Facebook or subscribe to her blog.
Initially operating out of her Los Angeles living room, it consisted of Byrnes’ original, hand-sewn pin up and rockabilly retro garments, displayed upon a solitary rolling rack. Her original line has continued to expand and grow along with the success of pinupgirlclothing.com, and still features the comfortable and oh-so-sexy styles that launched its fame, along with new bombshell dresses, retro swimsuits and bikinis and hot cheesecake tops and bottoms in sizes from XS to XXL, all using fabrics and prints exclusive to Pinup Couture.
Pinup Couture has a knack for striking the right balance between authentic retro inspiration and smoking-hot modern adaptations of timeless ‘40s and ‘50s fashions and provides a little something for bad-ass bobby soxers right on up to buxom bombshells.
Signature designs like The Micheline Dress in Black with Leopard Trim, a curve-hugging, fitted frock complete with gathered bodice and wiggle silhouette, or the vintage-inspired Sailor Swing Dress and Navy with White Trim, created with a bust-enhancing structured top and full-circle swing skirt, have the perfect Pinup Couture combination of classic and camp, as does the Natalie Dress in Black with Red Trim, a simple and graphic wiggle, and the exaggerated hourglass-shaped Bad Girl dress in Black Stretch Satin, which trims the waist and plumps the curves enough to pierce the hearts of admirers with a simple step of one’s stiletto heel.
The Bettie Retro One Piece Swimsuit in Black Cherry, inspired by a passion for the art of Vargas and, of course, Bettie Page and the Dee Dee Dress in Blue and Violet Floral, with a gathered circle skirt, tiny cap sleeves and Peter Pan collar are slightly more modest interpretations of classic styles with the sexy dash of girlish innocence that all pin up styles require.
Available internationally in retro boutiques Pinup Couture clothing is available not only at Pin Up Girl Clothing but also at at Baby Girl Boutique, Love Burlesque and other online retailers, as well as in shops around the world like Ozzie Dots in the U.S., Dolly Dagger Limited in the UK and Miss Mole or Rockabilly-Clothing in Germany.
